We moved their hoop house into the garden figuring that we'd let the chickens do our weeding and fertilizing for us. They absolutely loved it!

They are doing a great job at gobbling up all the weeds and are loving pecking around for bugs and worms. But the best part is that they are giving themselves dust baths in the sandy loam.

It's so funny to watch because as they roll around flipping dirt over their bodies, they actually purr with delight. I think I stood there for 15 minutes just watching them roll around in pleasure.

If we didn't have a white silkie that purrs when held, I would have to say you had cats mixed in with your chickens! I never knew chickens purred until 2 days ago!

My favorite is when they "coo" as if they are talking...Last summer, I had a lot of trouble with escaping chickens. I would rush to rescue them and return them to their 1/2 acre. While I was carrying them under my arm- I swear they were talking to me. Made me laugh every time!

Mine purr when they find a lovely bug or treat. It seems to be the noise they make to alert the others to share the source of pure joy with them!

They also 'talk' - when they speak to me they use this 'bob bob bob' voice, so I say 'bob bob bob' back and in our own way, we have a lovely little chat. I always shout 'Morning little Bob Bobs' as I go down the garden in my pajamas to let them out, and they always chorus 'bob bob' back at me.

Oh dear, I sound totally nuts
