Hi,
My name is Jenna. I started raising my first chickens this year. I purchased 13 day old chicks in April of this year. I requested the feed store in my town to order only 1 Rooster. But as usually happens, I ended up with 2. I decided on buff orphingtons and amuracanas. I have a little experience being around chickens, my parents raised them when I was young. But that was a long time ago.
Anyway, I was doing pretty good with my chicks. I had one chick that had a deformed beak, but she was doing pretty good. I would put her in a separate area with food so she could eat in peace. She and I became pretty good friends, I called her Chicky Chick. Every time she saw me coming she would fly up on my shoulder and talk to me. I was really attached to that little girl. Well, wouldn't you know it, my dog decided to kill her. (it was very heartbreaking)
But I now put her on a chain whenever she wants to go outside. I still had 10 Chickens and 2 Roos, which is still a good start. Well, then my neighbors dog came over and killed 3 of my Chickens and both of my Roos. I still had 7 healthy Chickens, but no chance of expansion without and Roos.
So I put an ad on Craig's list looking for Roos only. Luckily someone answered my Ad. I now have Roo Brothers(2). They are adjusting fine to the Girls and the Girls seem to be adjusting fine to the Boys. They are still a little afraid of me. But every night when I put them up for the night, I talk to them and pet them. I hope to get eggs hatched next spring.(I don't want any until then because it is getting really cold here) I am really enjoying my little flock. I let them run around my yard, and whenever I go outside they follow me everywhere. My Sister calls me Mama Chick Now.
I will keep everyone informed on how we are doing.
