Hello all, was wondering if anybody could please help me... I'd be dead grateful if you can!

The chicks at my work are now 6 weeks old. Growing fast! They have been exposed to outdoors but had a bit of a scare with an escaped ferret and unfortunately we lost a few :'(. They've been brought back indoors to safety, but I'm worrying if something is up with the remaining little ones. Two have swollen crops on their right hand sides. One seems to peck at food but doesn't seem to be actually eating it. I've picked her up and had a sniff down her mouth and I don't know if it's paranoia but it's smelling a little odd. She's also a little raspy with her breathing and seems to be shaking her head quite a bit.

Could she have picked up something from being outside? The poo at first when they first came back in was a little runny and sloppy, but looks better now. They are on chick crumb, being introduced to rearers, and have mixed grit on the side. I feed them treats of bread / greens / mealworms twice a week. They weren't on medicated chick crumb with coccidiostat before but we have some ordered in now. Would it be worth putting them on this too?

Thanks all. I'd hate to lose these two after losing others so horrifically :(. I hope they are ok.

Hi there! How are your chicks doing now? Are they eating better now? Sorry to hear about your losses. :( You are doing everything right, good job on the medicated feed and the chick grit. BTW, a large bulging crop is normal, it may not look normal though :)

Hiya, thanks for the lovely reply :).
They're doing loads better now, thank you :D. Eating well and the worst one has picked up too. They only have a swollen crop in the afternoon, quite late, so I'm thinking maybe it's just a result of gorging throughout the day? We did give them a short course of Baytril twice daily just in case they had picked up something nasty from their escape outside. They're now on growers pellets full time and occasional treats of mealworms and greenies. Just your usual inquisitive, runny-around chicks now, so I think the worry has passed! Maybe I was being a bit too molly-coddling and worrying!

Thanks again :).
