I know that some chicks don't take in all the yolk and then one of the methods is to wrap it in a wet paper towel, it's in a paper towel now but I'm not sure if it will live, and what else I can do. It opens it's eyes occasionally and cheeps. It is still breathing but it has this yellow sac with veins in it sticking out of it. Usually I wouldn't be so worried (this is my third hatch I've had) but when it was born there was a lot of blood and green liquid which I have never seen before. I've got it away from Mum because she kept trying to eat the sac so she's on me with a lamp over her. She's breathing but is there something else I can do? She's half and hour old now.

Thank you so so so much if you can help Mum isn't exactly the best she's a hamburg and my other mum's were silkies and they were better!!!

Hello, and

When you get 10 posts you can post a pic if you can get one and that would help a lot with prognosis.

If the lamp is on the bird but the bird is on you, it may well be overheating. They can take enough heat from your skin without needing a lamp as well. Not sure if I've understood your post correctly there though.

Without the pic it's hard to say if it will live or not, or if it needs something extra done or if you're doing all that is necessary. I hope it pulls through. Talking to them helps, they need to hear a voice respond to them for best results. Many baby animals have some kind of 'off' mechanism that swiftly shuts them down to prepare for death if they do not receive stimuli that reaffirms their chances of surviving. It's akin to failure to thrive syndrome.

All the best.

Hi thank you so much for replying :) I stayed with the chick for the whole 3 hours it was alive and I was constantly talking to it and trying to keep it's 4 other siblings from harming it. Unfortunately it died in my hands. I did take the lamp off eventually so it wouldn't overheat. After it died I saw some other deformations on the chick and some organs coming out as well so I don't know if it hatched itself out to early or if it was a genetic problem. Any ideas? I've buried it because there were tears over this poor chick so I don't have a photo sorry!
