My chicks got into human food yesterday and ate orange chicken...

In regards to the above post (which is super cute!), here's a picture showing some of my girls and one of the barn cats finishing off a cooked turkey carcass:

Our chickens love to have different things which technically qualify as people food. Bread is one of their favorites.

They are definitely meat eaters too. Just wait until yours find a frog in the garden......it turns brutal really fast. I call the ensuing chase Chicken football or maybe it is more like Chicken rugby. The lucky girl with the “treat” runs and everyone else that sees it give a full scale chase complete with attempted tackling.

Sorry for radio silence - been a bad month for family problems!

I have a follow up. It's my birthday today, and since I don't like traditional cake I made a cheesecake. One of those cheap boxed ones with cherry topping. My chicks are loose inside today due to rain. The cake was on the table, and I had to tend to my sick cat. (Cancer, we think).

While I was gone the chicks ate my cheesecake. Cherries in a glaze, crust, and cake. They went through an entire piece between themselves.

Ah. Is this going to cause problems? It's been about 20 minutes or so. They're all asleep, but not showing signs of problems. Just sneezing a lot as they do when stimulated.

I guess, can I be furious that they ate my cheesecake or do I need to panic and keep an eye on them?

They're not even sorry. They're now using my leg as a perch.

Wow, guess they have a sweet tooth. Are they loose in your house? Or do you have a brooder for them that is enclosed. Sounds like you may have to lock them up when you have food out just for their own safety. Hopefully they are ok after all of that dessert.

They actually stay in my garage, but with spring rains we've had flooding problems. I've learned to keep the screen door shut so when they go out back they don't come in for orange chicken. I had to have them in the house last night due to even more flooding, so I was letting them get some running done before I locked them in the bathroom for the night.

They go to their forever home soon, and they're my last chickens. Otherwise I'd build a coop.

Thankfully it seems nothing in the cheesecake harmed them. They pigged out and went to bed. This morning they're fine again.

Lesson learned, though. Guard the food. I didn't even think they could jump that high yet.

They're locked in my bathroom. My garage is still flooded from the storm (Utah) so they're in the house. They go to their forever home at the end of this month, and I won't be getting more for a while, so I can't justify a coop.

But this is what I woke up to this morning. My cockatiel tossed his food dish. Zinthos found it and was okay with this. I feel like I have a bunch of two year olds! :p
