Three days ago, it rained a little off and on, so I moved them into the shed that night and put them back in there outside pen the next day because it was sunny. The ground seem pretty dry, maybe a little damp in the edges. Well I noticed yesterday and today that he was not active. So i put him alone in a pen in the shed. I started giving him some corid just in case it was coccidiosis. I noticed his poop was green and a little moist. he is just standing in the corner now sleeping and hasn't eaten. I forced a little of the water mixed with corid in his mouth this morning. Any suggestions. Please I lost one rooster with similar symptoms but I acted sooner this time. Please advise! Don't want lose another one being sick. No red or bloody poop so far but he is not active and not eating.

How old is this bird? I would keep giving him the medicated water with an eyedropper or needless syringe every couple hours the first day or so and see if he perks up in a couple days. He will not likely drink enough on his own since he's feeling crummy.

He is 5 months old. You are right he is not drinking on his own. What about food? Should I liquify some food or would he start eating when he feels better?

Hello,
I'm in west Wales, U.K. and today our cockerel has suddenly become very sleepy. George is an elderly old boy at 10 years of age, so he may not be handling the autumn moult terribly well at his advanced age, or we could be nearing the end of his life, I don't know. However, he does not seem to have any other problems, other than slightly stiff legs. Concerned that he may not have eaten anything much today, I made some tasty warm mash: cereal flakes, porridge oats, dried fruit, crushed seeds, seedy brown bread, with plenty of olive oil and some honey, all mixed up with warm water. I have used this as invalid food when any of the flock have had mild digestive trouble and it helps. He ate lots and clearly really enjoyed it, and it perked him up for a good half hour during which he had a wander about with the girls as normal. But when I checked him again, he was flat out in the grass, snoozing once more in the sun (sunny but not too warm today - stiff breeze).

He's a wonderful, gentle bird, with a Zen-like approach to life - eats out of my hand, but always ensures the girls get first dibs. Can anyone thrown any light on this sudden sleepiness?

Wow your rooster has longevity! He seems well taken care of. Is he getting a lot of sun light to get more active. It might be possible if the chicken is overweight, he might be lazy and out of shape. Maybe you can give him greens such as Kale, Chard, and Spinach. Maybe your occasional meal worm and crickets. Give him so organic raw apple cider vinegar in his water. His age will slow him down but try more greens and less corn scratch and some morning sun. Maybe he will he will perk up. You might want to treat him for mites which will drain the blood out of him and make him week.

Hi there, Cocopop - thanks you so much for your kind reply - I had left out some info, I realized. Our birds are out from around 7am and put themselves to bed when they are ready, although they can pop in and out of the coop during the day at will. They have a really large run, accommodating 11 of them and are generally out amongst the greenery, tree cover and bushes as well as sunshine and general weather (we get our fair share of rain!) the whole day long. Mind you, I hadn't heard of the vinegar thing, so that was a really useful suggestion - I'll try and give that a go tomorrow. Once again, many thanks!
