I have finally decided to post my feeling between the Cornish X and Freedom Rangers. I have raised Freedom Rangers for the last 2 yrs. I decided this year to do both since I lost a bunch of layers due to coons and decided to fill the order with the Cornish X. I already had 36 Freedom Rangers that were 1 week older than the 12 Cornish X.
Cornish-X: Pros- I was surprised that I had no chick death and had only one with leg problems at about 6 wks. When Butchered at 8-9 wks I was impressed with the size of the breast.
CONS: I did not care for the lack of feathering on the breast and lack of ranging until they were older. Having to regulate feed.
Freedom Ranger Pros: I only lost 2 chicks out of 36. They all range very well. Other than the hens the size difference was not what I expected VS. the Cornish X. I do not weigh my birds but visually not much different for only being 1 wk older. I can load their feeder up and not worry about over eating.
Freedom Ranger Cons: Roosters can have a lot more attitude towards the hens. Breast are smaller but legs and thighs seem to be larger. Hens do not grow near as fast as the Roosters.
My conclusion: I am going to stick with the Freedom Rangers. I do not do this to make money. I only do this to feed my family with quality food. My wife and kids agree that they feel better eating the Freedom Rangers instead of the Cornish X.
These are only my opinions. There are many posts on this subject, and I figured it was time to express my feeling on the subject.
