my coop is simple...

I would assume he is talking about the run. That is some pretty big openings in the wire!

Yes, SHE, Shellie was referring to the large goat fencing and chicken wire.

My dog would tear that apart in 15 minutes flat. Plus, there's no netting on top. We've got loads of hawks here. Probably just as many owls too.

But I like the coop and run, it's very nice.

Umm... how is your dog planning on tearing that apart? that is steal fencing with chicken wire around it... and we have hawks and owls but they dont really bother my chickens... so yes it is safe and the reason that i dont have a top is because my chickens are aloud to fly in and out as much as they want.

Nice coop!

I live way up in the woods, and I don't have netting overtop of my run. We have plenty of hawks, but they're more interested in chipmunks.

i dont want to argue either "or fight" i was just wondering how your dog was going to tear it up? and i know if a predator really wanted in they could but that is like any other fence isnt it?

I want to point out first that the rod that props the window open is genius! -missed saying that before.

Cattle panels can look like common fence in pictures but they are way different. The panels are made of about ¼ inch rod and then galvanized to last longer than I will and they provide for much of their own support. Cattle could probably destroy them, but not enough have been exposed to the taste of chicken to pose enough of a threat. In my limited experience the addition of chicken wire is not as big of a draw for predators as the chicken itself.

I don’t know where the OP lives, how much land they control - or like-minded neighbors, etc - but the run could be considered excessively elaborate in some areas of the country as long as it keeps the chickens IN. If that particular run were built where I live (the PNW) a dog would eventually climb or jump over it (leaving it intact) - but if I were in Iowa on a 1000+++ acre farm I would probably not have to worry at all (roaming dogs would be worried) ex: have you seen the runs that commercial pastured chickens are grown on (without a coop)?

I think it looks great! I'm going to modify one part of my coop this week so I can move the pullets into it. They can fly as well, but I don't want them out, so I'm going to put a wire-type cover over the outside part. And I agree, no dog is chewing through a cattle panel! lol

Your nesting boxes are simple, too.....I've been trying to think of a way to make them simply and with low cost...good ideas you have there!!

thanks! and luckily i do live on a farm with close to 1000 acers so i think i will be fine!
