My Coop Update

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

You'll like the linoleum on the floor... so easy to clean and disinfect! I'm building a 12x20' breeding coop in the next week or so... will look very similar to what you have so far!

I'm still in the idea/planning phase, but the goal is a similar sized breeding coop. I'd love to see pics of yours as it's built. Is this an original design or is it going to be based on another coop you've seen? There are tons of pics of great backyard coops, but I haven't had any luck finding anything that would work for a "few breeds" breeding coop.

To tell you the truth we didn’t really have a design. My husband works in the oil industry and they got a shipment of some very large pumps; he brought the pump crates home.

The floor is the floor of one of the pump crates (we took it apart and spaced the boards out more evenly) with some added plywood and Linoleum.

The two long walls are the sides of one of the crates with another crate taken apart and some of the wood added to strengthen the walls.

The short front and back walls we used wood taken off the crates and built them ourselves.

If you will click on the link in my signature you can see the whole thing from the beginning up till now. You can also see some pieces of a couple of the crates that we haven’t used leaning up against a tree on the left hand side of the coop.

If you will look at the way they did their side windows here in this blog; this is how we are planning to make our windows. This seems to be the simplest way of doing windows for people who don’t know how to do windows. We like the way they put a fan in the window and we plan to do the same; but we are going to put a double layer of hardware cloth just to make sure we don’t get any uninvited guests.

Cold weather is not a problem for us the heat is our biggest problem. In the spring the temperature stays in the 80’s from mid March till around the end of May. Jun through September and sometimes even October the daytime temps are in the mid to upper 90’s. In the winter (November through March) the temperature usually stays in the low to mid 70’s and rarely goes below 40°.

We usually have winter on a Wednesday….a cold front will come through and the temps will drop into the low 40’s for a day or two then it will warm back up into the 70’s.
