My dog and the neighbor's chickens

I don't think that was ever in dispute, Triple Willow. The poster went over and apologized, offered to pay for the chicken, and offered to help them pay for more fencing. The neighbor turned her down. Hopefully, with time, and remembering to to close their gate, OP and her neighbor will get past this.

Our neighbor came by last night. They decided an amount that we could pay them for the chicken, and we had the cash. He also brought us a quart of goat's milk, which was such a sweet gesture. It turned out they did just need a couple days to think about it.

We have good neighbors. We're lucky. Thanks for chiming in, everybody.

As far as your gate accidentally being left open goes, you can get a gate spring at the hardware store for ~$12 that'll close the gate automatically, if that would help. The staff should be able to point you in the right direction.

Or have the 14 year old son pay (or work for the neighbor) for the dead chicken. Help the Son remember to shut the gate the next time.

So glad things worked out for the best. So many people are "anti-neighbor" (and sometimes rightfully so, I get that) and it makes me sad. We live in a rural community and when someone has a problem, the neighbors all pull together to help one another. When our house burned to the ground 10 years ago, the whole community pitched in to help replace our belongings, had a benefit supper and auction, and just supported us in general. We can never repay that kindness. If we were on the outs with our neighbors, it would have been so much harder to deal with our losses.

PS - I would like to add, that there is a difference between "our neighbors" and "people who live near us". We have both. We have people who live 5 miles or more away that we consider neighbors. We have someone who lives about a mile away who lives near us....
