When we got home last night, not only was our Call Drake missing, but out precious Silkie, Cutie Pie, was gone. My kids were in a panic because we LOVE her. DH and I noticed that our mini dachshund, Emma, was more vocal than usual (dachshunds are really vocal ANYWAY) and we couldnt figure out what was wrong. I went into the machine shed for the heck of it, and the dog got really excited and started crying and yipping like she was hurt. She ran ahead of me into the shed and cried more when I didnt follow her. So I went after her and she led me to a scrap pile in the corner and kept looking under some boards and then at me like she was showing me something. I looked under the boards and there was Cutie Pie! She got herself stuck wedged between the sand and the bottom board! Herlil butt was wet, like the dog was trying to pull her out, but there wasnt a scratch on her and the dog was SO happy when I pulled Cutie Pie out! I made sure to praise Emma profusely and held Cutie Pie so that Emma could sniff and lick her before running in a circle so proud of herself for saving the chickie! It made the rest of our crappy evening a little brighter

DH says that she was feeling guilty and thats why she showed me where to find Cutie Pie, but I dont believe that, because from the looks of things she had been stuck for quite a while and within EASY reach of the dog to kill her but the dog never did so to me that says we had a total "Lassie" moment on our farm

I thought about Lassie when I read your post too. Good Girl!

Well now the dog has ADOPTED the silkie. We got home Friday and she was gone again. Looked high and low, she was GONE. About 9:00 I walked into the house and noticed the dog was going under the porch, which she doesnt do much. I grabbed the flashlight and checked it out and this is what I saw...(please excuse the mess, we havent spring cleaned under there yet....)

She was curled around the chick keeping her warm. And she cried on the porch till i let her sleep in the garage next to the brooder where the silkie is now. So far this weekend I had to hold her up 3 times to check her baby in there before she would stop crying.

Update--

Last night a 3 week old guinea flew out of the brooder while DH was flippin chicken on the grill. By the time he shut the grill and located it, the dog was sitting with it, comforting it.... So apparently she isnt just in love with Cutie Pie the Silkie, but Emma loves ALL of our baby birds.... which I find weird, because its "baby blackbird season" as DH calls it, and she must eat a dozen a day that fall out of their nests... but she knows the ones that are "family" and takes care of them... crazy dog! I still wont leave her alone with them but she LOVES her supervised mommy time with them!!!

Nevermind! XD
