Ok my guys free range all day. They come and go to the coop when every they feel like it to lay. They door is about 12" wide and 15" tall.

I was getting 6-7 eggs a day then 2. While washing dishes I happend to look up and see my Black Lab comming out the coop door with eggs in here mouth. I was so mad. I stopped doing dishes and went out and spanked her butt. She left them alone for a day then right back at it.

I can not chain her. She will dig it up or pull it out. Kennel is out of the question she dig out. Even when we drove poles in the ground.

How can I break her of this nasty habbit. I really do not want to cage my chickens. I do not think it is fair to them.

Any ideas? Shock collar is next.

I've heard people say fill an egg with something gross to stop chickens from egg-eating.

I wonder if it would work with a dog?

Chickens can't taste capcaicin (what makes peppers hot) but I'd be willing to bet that dogs can.

Blow on the contents of several eggs and put those in there.

Be mindful that dogs can smell much better than us, though, and that yours will know which egg had the tobasco or whatever in it.

Is there a way you can prohibit her from getting into the henhouse at all while still giving the hens access? Maybe you could make the pop door smaller?

We just posted a few days ago, the same problem.

(our dog is our predator). I don't have any idea's for you.

We are just keeping our hens locked up until we can extend our fence. I think am going to try the hot sauce, please post if you figure something out! Good luck to you!

I like the idea of filling the egg with red pepper!!! Or something else that would make the dog think they were yucky....our dogs will pull their chains up, too, so instead I wrap the chain around a tree or fence post and clip it, then clip them to the other end. They've broken a chain here and there, but they've never pulled the tree out!!!

I would try making the door smaller. My door is 8 inches wide and 12 inches high. Some of the orpingtons and the roosters bend down and walk through, but they all fit and it would keep your dog out.

My dogs can not get to the coop, but if I set the egg basket down in the yard for one second, my black lab will get two in his mouth, run off and hide to eat them. He doesn't like the shell, so I find the shell laying on the deck.

Good Luck!!
