My dog just killed my two cochins

Thanks everyone. He never paid any attention at all to my adult chickens; this is why I trusted him. Something about those young cochins intrigued him. I have learned my lesson- he goes out only on a lead if the chickens are out.

My cat got my 2 silkie chicks the other day. I had hatched them from an incubator and they were only 3 days old. I'm sorry for your loss, I know how you feel

Okay, i just dont get it. Everyday I get on here i see post about peoples dogs killing their chickens. I dont want to sound mean at all, but its a given that dogs and chickens dont mix. Even a little shihtuz will try and kill a chicken. Its in them, its part of them, I know some dogs can be trained but i will never ever chance it. Its like us being hungry and there is a delicious chicken with home made noodles and corn on the cob sitting in front of us but we're not suppose to touch it. COME ON PEOPLE.

Did that sound mean or does it just sound like i am so tired of reading about these poor little sweet chickens being killed by humans that dont protect them. They are like children that need to be protected.

Sorry for sounding like a brute.

One more thought! Abusing a dog for being what it is, is sick.

Thank you for pointing this out. We all make mistakes, but after reading all these posts, one should really think about who's hanging around with the chickens, and if he/she is trustworthy. (by that I mean if the dog is trustworthy)

And yes you are exactly right; no matter if the dog killed your chickens and made you feel really sad and angry, it is in NO WAY right to abuse a dog. You trusted him/her with the chickens even though dogs, no matter how sweet they are, can turn into killers when there are helpless prey nearby, especially ones that make interesting noises and flap their wings and run away when they are chased. To a dog, this is like a game of tag and a meal. So please, don't tell your dog that he did wrong by hurting him. Instead, do it another way that is not considered to be abuse.

Thanks! Please don't think I'm trying to sound harsh, either.

If you are tired of reading this type of thread I suggest you seek other topics. You dont' have to read any thread you don't want; it shouldn't infringe on my right to post if I want to.

And I would never abuse my dog for being a dog. He did what came naturally. I was just fooled because he never had any interest at all. He has walked right past the chickens many a time. So should I have expected it, really> I don't know.

I didnt mean you personally. I dont usually read the threads, i just read the topic of the threads and cant believe how many threads have been posted about their dogs killing their chickens. I just happen to respond to this thread about it. I had just come in from visiting my chickens and just love them and it hurts me to think of all the chickens that die from predators. Forgive me for saying anything. I just need to do the best that I can to protect my own. I hope you are okay and I hope you can get some new cochins, they are beautiful. I would love to have a couple of cochins but cant seem to just get one or two of them. I kinda cringed when i read that they were cochins. Anyway, i hope you will be okay and i am sorry for your loss.
