We have a rescue dog named Ruby. Her abuse story is just plain horrible. The worst thing, was that the rest of the dogs in the cage with her, killed all her tiny puppies. She was almost mauled to death trying to save them. It was ugly.
Ruby has decided our new chicks are her charges. She runs to the brooder and whines whenever there’s an anxious peep. She tries to lick them and protect them when they are out. She guards the brooder and stares up at it with pure love and joy. We think she would literally love them to death from the puppy nibbling mommies do, so she can’t get close. We are worried about them until they can defend themselves from the Lovebug, but were almost in tears when she started. We love her and would do anything to heal her trauma. And the chicks did the job. She finally got her “puppies” that she’s wanted for so long. It’s the best.
