My dogs brought home a chicken...

Someone's dogs killed the hen that laid the dark egg in my profile picture. Yah, its a good idea to let the dogs run loose. I couldn't get to them to shoot them.

They also took my son's RIR hen.

I hope OP is joking, because that whole post is full of plain old ignorance. Still, you've pretty much received the gambit on securing your dogs from everyone else, so I will only say that you should look past some of harshness in the posts and take their advice.

That being said, an evicerated bird could mean a few things. Some animals have been known to get a taste for organ meat and exclusivley feed on them; there is even a species of vulture that goes through the anal cavity of its prey because its beak is too soft to rip through flesh...not sure if it is in the US, though. There is also the possibility of a farmer posioning the carcass and dropping it out as a bait bird for predators.

Seriously, though. Secure your dogs, and you won't have that problem again.

At the risk of inviting the wrath of seemingly everyone, I wanted to update/CLOSE the saga by telling you all that when we spoke to the neighbor a couple of months after the mysterious chicken incident (see original post), he indicated that sometimes one of their chickens dies and he throws the carcass in the ditch. He also assured us that there is no way our dogs can get into the run to get his birds.

So, I feel the need to vindicate my dogs and say, they DIDN'T kill anything, and they DON'T run unattended any more than the cows that get out of a fence once in awhile... AKA= not on purpose.

All I can say is my dog was brought home by the Sheriff (took off looking for me when I drove into town a week after we moved out here to the country, she has major seperation anxiety) and we reallocated our resources and built a solid 5ft wire topped livestock fence and chains for all our gates (dog would unlatch these 8ft livestock panel gates herself with her paw-- giant schnauzers are smart, and strong), and now she is a good girl and stays home (when I go back to Town for work I actually take her with me, because of said seperation anxiety). GC-- Am glad to hear the dogs in question did not kill the chicken, and hope that you do take care to ensure their safety in the future....
