At 530 this morning I woke up to my little dog Carmel a 70lb Boxer mix throwing a royal fit and not in her usual tone. As soon as I was awake I also realized that the chickens in the adjoined pen were also throwing a fit. I thought maybe one of my 2 dogs had found a way into the chicken side of the pen-which happened once before when I forgot that one panel (10x6 ft kennel panels) had a large hole just covered with the green plastic chicken wire and my big dog Diesel a 120 Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd mix got through and played tag with a chicken--a game they both play with the cat, but unfortunately for that hen, she isn't as tough as a cat. The whole was then covered with heavy gauge 2x4 inc fencing.
So I get up go to the backdoor, grab a flashlight and shine it out. As soon as the door opened both dogs where in the front corner of their side of the pen happy as can be, I could see 5 hens and a roo, but not my 2 Cornish in the adjoined pen, but nothing else. I closed the door and found shoes to go see if I could find the 2 Cornish, as well as check on the Juvis which are in a different pen and you can't see them well from the door.
I get to the laying pen and I find the Cornish all birds in good shape, no feathers on the ground, both dogs came running toward this end of the pen when they both started to bark and Carmel was pouncing on/at something against the kennel panel, behind the nest box. I went over and shined the light and say a decent sized coon nearly dead.
I went in and woke my husband up so he could finish it off and he did. I then made sure all the juvies were accounted for. So no losses for me tonight. I am proud of my pups. They had to have some training to ignore the chickens in the attached pen. The dogs have a 30x20 and the birds a 10x20 with 2 panels shared, and the only other time they have gone nuts near the chickens is when a mouse took up residence and Carmel kept trying to catch it. She has a high prey drive.

Viscous aren't they?
