At 530 this morning I woke up to my little dog Carmel a 70lb Boxer mix throwing a royal fit and not in her usual tone. As soon as I was awake I also realized that the chickens in the adjoined pen were also throwing a fit. I thought maybe one of my 2 dogs had found a way into the chicken side of the pen-which happened once before when I forgot that one panel (10x6 ft kennel panels) had a large hole just covered with the green plastic chicken wire and my big dog Diesel a 120 Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd mix got through and played tag with a chicken--a game they both play with the cat, but unfortunately for that hen, she isn't as tough as a cat. The whole was then covered with heavy gauge 2x4 inc fencing.

So I get up go to the backdoor, grab a flashlight and shine it out. As soon as the door opened both dogs where in the front corner of their side of the pen happy as can be, I could see 5 hens and a roo, but not my 2 Cornish in the adjoined pen, but nothing else. I closed the door and found shoes to go see if I could find the 2 Cornish, as well as check on the Juvis which are in a different pen and you can't see them well from the door.

I get to the laying pen and I find the Cornish all birds in good shape, no feathers on the ground, both dogs came running toward this end of the pen when they both started to bark and Carmel was pouncing on/at something against the kennel panel, behind the nest box. I went over and shined the light and say a decent sized coon nearly dead.

I went in and woke my husband up so he could finish it off and he did. I then made sure all the juvies were accounted for. So no losses for me tonight. I am proud of my pups. They had to have some training to ignore the chickens in the attached pen. The dogs have a 30x20 and the birds a 10x20 with 2 panels shared, and the only other time they have gone nuts near the chickens is when a mouse took up residence and Carmel kept trying to catch it. She has a high prey drive.

The 2 killers

Viscous aren't they?

Wow! My dog, a standard poodle, doesn't kill anything but chickens! She loved to catch them when they used to free range. If they didn't run then she wouldn't chase them. She thought they were just toys. Argh!!!! All birds are now fenced in so she can't touch them. She is now much better trained. So are the kids at not leaving the door open. Congrats on your dogs killing the coon.

Awesome job!

Love the cloth diaper too

. BG maybe? Can't quite tell...

Unfortunately I discovered feathers and a missing Juvi when I did mid day water/treat/food rounds. The juvies are only 2 months old, but I did not see those feathers at 530 this morning. :(

Nope a little boy--The covers look filthy, but I guess white covers when your parents work with cars, dirt and grease probably isn't going to stay white. Oh well they do the job! Believe it or not he was born a month early (6lbs6oz), and in that picture was 3 months old (11lbs). Boy is in a hurry and the dogs can't wait to have lots of rough play.

Flock man if it moves these 2 will chase and play with it--which is why the birds are penned up, and the dogs don't get free range of the yard unless we are outside. We had a lovely pure blooded Pyr (momma of the big boy above), who was great about staying in her yard during the day, but patroled several of our neighbors yards and the long horn pasture at night. We had a family move up the road (now gone--uhh in jail for selling drugs to undercover cops), Abbi HATED them. One of the guys came down trying to buy our trucks and was high. My husband got tired of him saying "But I will give you $200 a piece man" and let go of Abbi's collar and went inside. About an hour later there was a knock on the door, Abbi was back inside on an air vent tired, but threw a fit when hubby opened the door. The druggy had come back down to tell us the dog chased him the 1/4 mile up the road to his house. (Yes he was stupid enough to come back) Abbi also took a dislike to White diesel pickups (like theirs) and began to chase them if they drove by our property I do believe they may have come down to steal stuff. She had to be rehomed when she started going after the neighbors dog, and now lives a large farm about 2 hrs away where she has goats to protect.
