Ok, does anyone have any advice on how to train your dog to be kind to your chicks/chickens????
I really want them to have a loving relationship, not one where the chick is scared out of it's mind, and the dog constantly tries to eat the chick!!!!
Help!!!

Of course if depends on many things, like the breed of dog, how aggressive it is toward other animals, how well the dog can be trained, etc.

We get our chicks this coming week and have a two year old black lab, Sammie. She is pretty cool with the other pets we currently have, so I hope I can train her to chill with the chicks!

Yes that is a pet rat on her back!

I have 2 german shepherds and a cocker spaniel puppy. The germans don't even notice the chickens and the chickens don't notice them. My puppy on the other hand went through a 2 week chasing spree a few weeks ago. Luckily she just chased them and now after much yelling "don't chase the chickens" she stopped. I never leave the dogs outside alone if the chickens are roaming just in case.

I train all my animals to get along. My dog will kill a opossum and a skumk but will not harm any of our pet animals.

Training a dog the "leave it" command is very important. I fully trained my dog as a puppy and the leave it command sure has come in handy. I searched YouTube and found out how to do it.

If you have a dog that is already trying to eat the chicks, it will be very difficult to train. Some dogs automatically have a strong prey drive. I've read on here how some people's dogs ate and killed their entire flock. It's heartbreaking.

Oh my gosh... my cavaliers would NEVER EVER hesitate when the chance comes to chase my parakeets... uuuuh i hope that is different w/ the chicks!!!

My little Maltese follows me to the coop and tries to grab the treats before the chickens do. When they are free ranging he could care less about them. As for chicks, he knows what NO! means and won't touch them. However the big dog can stick her head into the brooder. She just licks them and they peck at her nose. Eating chicks isn't allowed.

I have 2 Jack Russells but I have always brought things home. Baby kittens, birds, rabbits , squirrels, etc. They have been exposed to about everything, know that it is a " baby" and to leave it alone. I don't trust them 100 % , but to a certain extent. I wont have any worries when they get to be another month old.
Leave it , is a very very very important command every dog should know. Also men , if you take them shopping to Menards or Lowe's with you .

You don't want to know how I trained one of my dogs, lets just say he got ahold of one and he will never go near them again. The chickens actually run him off from his food. He's a good dog I thought I had him trained enough but I guess I didn't. But now he is. I have two others that all I had to do is holler at them and they left them alone but I have two more that if they get out of their pen they chase them all over. One actually got out the other day and chased the ducks into the pond. My wife and kids said it was the funniest thing. The dog would swim after the drake and when she got too close the drake would dive under and come up behind the dog. My wife said the dog was so confused. So I have a lot more work to do with those two. But it can be done.

Good luck.
