These are my girls, they are almost 4 months old. I was told they were hens but I'm really worried because I am almost postitive Nugget just turned into a rooster. It seems like overnight her/his comb and waddle turned red and got really big comparred to Bouillon. I'm so bumbed because I can't have roosters were I live and the guy we got em from said he'd take him back but..but I love her/him already and they walk around together, they never leave each others side. I think Bouillon will be sad..
OK apparently b/c of spam problems as a new member I can't post pics...I will as soon as possible b/c I could use your input. Bouillons tail is typically straight back and Nugget's is more up. I'm not too keen on the saddle feathers, maybe I jusst don't know what I'm really looking for but I don't notice a difference on either one. I did notice Nuggets legs/feet are a little darker looking too, almost kinda of dirty looking comparred to Bouillon, don't know if that indicates anything at all. Not sure if this can help you to tell me anything but I'll get pics up asap

Take a close look at the feathers on his/her back, right before the tail.

Pullets will have rounded feathers. Cockerels will grow in pointed feathers. This is the saddle area.

I would not get to hung up on tail angle.

Comb might be a clue, although depending on breed, she might be nearing point of lay.

What breed are we dealing with?

Sorry, Dominique, duh!

There should be a clear color difference if you have male / female.

The male would be much lighter in color.

If they are both the same shade of darkness, I would almost bet on pullets.

nivtup, What breed is that rooster in your avatar? I have one that looks just like him!! Noone can figure out what he is
He's only about 5 mths old, and his tail feathers are turning white

Sometimes you can also look at the way they stand. Roosters usually stand more upright than hens. here's a pic of my roo's saddle feathers

there doesn't seem to be much of a color difference. Nugget is a little bit larger, so we were thinkin MAYBE Bouillon will look similar when she gets to that size..but I don't know. They seem to be the same shade but I'll have to study them in the sun light tomorrow to make sure and try to check out the saddle feathers again. My understanding is thye came from the same batch but I'm not sure if they have the same parents..not sure if there is some variation depending on that....o wonderful i can put up pics now!! ok introducing Nugget!..

o wow Nugget def doesn't have saddle feathers like that, but is it b/c he/she's only 4 months old? Do they get those later?

this is about a month ago, they looked exactly the same, we could barely tell them apart. this is the only pic i have of their saddle area right now

Dominiques would have a rose comb. I think they are Barred Rocks or some mix. The legs look a little too yellow to be pure barred rocks, but they both look girly to me. I am not a true chicken professional, but I have been in your shoes with what I purchased as a barred rock chick that turned into a DOminique rooster.

Barred rock girls. Nugget is getting ready to lay, that's why the larger comb/wattles and the redder face. Bullion will develop the same in a while. At this age you would see long, pointy, flowing hackle and saddle feathers starting. A roo would be larger, much thicker legs, and probably crowing.
