Hi all. First post here but I have been getting mounds of knowledge from this forum over the last year of being a feather mom. THANK YOU ALL!!!
My question: Is it possible for a duck to go mute from trauma, or could my duck’s sphyrinx be punctured?
She was attacked by a fox last night. Thankfully I intervened at the beginning. She has what appears to be a puncture mark on her right shoulder and then another one on her chest to the left of the breast bone from her perspective.
She has made absolutely no sound. Not anything at all since this happened.
The vet said to clean them with normal saline and I have been. I have her inside in a room by herself just healing up.
she typically has A LOT TO SAY!!!
It’s Saturday and I can’t get her in until Monday. The duck doctor won’t be in until Wednesday. Meanwhile I would like to know what’s going on with her if anyone has any ideas. 🦆💕

No one here is able to confirm what the case might be for certain, but I would lean towards the sudden voice loss to be correlated with blunt force trauma to the area. In the case that there was a puncture in the syrinx, it would seem likely you'd be noticing severe dyspnea (heavy breathing), along with other respiratory-related issues.

Thank you! I looked up a similar picture online but was not able to determine whether or not dyspnea would be associated. The GREAT news is she started making her “little” sounds today! Still not quite back to normal but making progress.
she has some other issues but her wings open amd close as they should. Technically she was in her right shoulder. I’m sure she’s in pain.
Anyway, I very much appreciate your reply. Based on the terminology you used I’m guessing you have a medical background as well? Fellow nurse perhaps?

I'm happy to hear she is doing better!

You're welcome. Good catch, I am currently a veterinary technician student.
