This is probably not a good sign? I was shocked when i checked the stall this morning and found an egg! Now for those who don't know, dusty is with her almost 4wk brood... so this is a bit, er.. soon? she's also not really paying much mind to these babies anymore.

My weather is still pretty yucky but were attempting to let them out a wee bit, relate with the flock in person vs behind wire and so forth but she virtually ignores them, it's way to cold for them to actually leave with her, so we put them back in and she goes off with the flock.

Leaving her locked in with them won't do any good as she is roosting up away from them anyways, now she did go back in willingly tonight but frankly I am frustrated. This is her second brood, last year she dumped this motherhood thing at about 4wks, even sooner this time around at only a touch over 3wks(they will be 4wks come wed/thurs)

The babies are a bit distressed mama is being so negligent, maybe i am overacting, ugh, i don't think i'll have her do nests again, her mothering instinct is only marginal and yes, she's pure 'scovie, non hatchery but she is under 3yo so this could be a reason?? Mind you i have another who i cannot get to let go of the darn babies! lol

Some ducks just don't get the momma mojo, especially at first.

I'd sweep them into a brooder and take over for her. Like that's all you need, another bunch of work, right?

I do not think you are overreacting.

I think you're being a good duck person.

Thanks, the rather silly part is how she sat through a frigid feb to only grow tired of them not long after it starts lol

I will probably leave them in the stall in the barn as that is what their used too, it's got the heat lamp still and they can see/talk to all the other ducks.

Although, perhaps I am wrong? Is it worse to leave them there craving her? Oye there huge already so it's hard to give them space in any brooder or crate I have.

I had a feeling this winter hatch stuff wasn't going to be easy, good things these babies are cute!

She laid again this morning! she took them around a bit but then left with the flock so i put them in the barn loose, there ok. They were uncomfortable with her gone and only me babysitting lol
