On Thursday, when I got home, I went outside to get our daily egg from Olivia. Whe I opened the door she yelled at me and told me to go away. I figured she must be laying an egg, so I left her alone. I went outside an hour later, and sure enough...Olivia was still in the nest box. She yelled again and I started to get nervous. My first thought was, "Is she egg-bound?" I tried to look at her vent and see if anything was wrong, but everything was fine. Then the idea came to me. "A broody hen?" I put my hand under her and sure enough...there was an egg. Olivia is a Bantam Cochin hen that I bought at a fair because she had layed two eggs in one day! The previous owners had said she would steal the other hen's eggs and would sit on them. I didn't really believe this until now! I think I'll try to find a few fertile eggs for her to hatch. (None of her's are fertile because we don't have a rooster.) I think Olivia would be a great mom to a few chicks of her own...

I can't wait to put some fertile eggs under her. I wonder what she'll think when they hatch???

both of you will probably be delighted. Congratulations.

In hopes that the behavior one of my flock showed yesterday is the beginning of broodiness, I have started to set aside some fertile eggs for hatching. So much better to have the hen do the hatching and rearing. Good luck with your hatch.

Thanks! From now on I'm going to let the girls do the hatching for me. It seems it can give you a better hatch rate from what I've heard. Also, I love to see momma hen with her babies:) My little cochin bantam chick that I have now, (Teddy) was raised by his momma and she was very sweet to her babies. She had at least 15 or 20 chicks under her that she took care of! Were going to talk to a friend tomorrow about possibly buying some eggs from her for Olivia to hatch. I feel bad taking the un-fertile eggs from Olivia...she starts to cry:( Once we have some fertile eggs under her that she can keep, she'll be happy:)

Good luck, keep us posted. I'm hoping one of my hens is on the verge of going broody...wouldn't that make the hatch easy?? :O)

Olivia is even more broody today! We talked to our friend and we are getting a few fertile Silkie eggs. Yay!

We plan to drive over there today to pick them up. I've been very impressed with her birds. My two silkies I got from her last year both won blue ribbons in the fair. I showed Bam-Bam, a partridge silkie pullet, and Pebbles, a blue silkie cockerel. I sadly had to get rid of my Pebbles since I cant have roosters in my neighborhood. He is now very happily a breeder rooster for the lady we are getting eggs from! Maybe I'll get a few babies from Pebbles??? Sadly I don't have Bam-Bam any more. She got egg-bound and didn't make it. We think it was do to the food we were getting since it didn't have enough protein. (Now we have switched to a new food and the girls love it). Well things like that happen I guess:( Pebbles and Bam-Bam were siblings. So if I get an egg from Pebbles I'll get a chick who is Bam-Bam's neice! From what I've heard Pebbles has been throwing out alot of Partridge babies:)

Heres her website if you are intrested in getting silkies or just want to look at pictures. If you got o her youtube page, in her video, "Silkies free ranging" You can see Pebbles. He is the blue rooster running around and showing off:)
