My first chick died-- is it something contagious? Preventable?

Hi there =(

So, I posted this is the raising chicks section, but then realized it might be better suited for this section. Any guesses or tips would be appreciated or helpful. I'm quite the worry-wart with my little girls.

I got my first three little girls from a local farm store, who got local chicks. All three chicks were healthy for the first two days, running around, eating, drinking, no fear of people. I kept the water and water clean, and out from directly under the light. The temperature has remained steady at 95F. The litter is clean and paper towels were placed over it initially so I could make sure everything was working okay and they knew what their food was.

Then, last night, my husband comes home from work and finds our little Ameraucana on her back. She's barely cheeping and wiggling her legs (like she was stuck and couldn't get off her back?). He put her on her feet and she shot off running, and then laid down. A few hours later, with one leg sprawled in front of her, she passed away =(

What on earth could make a chick lay on it's back and then die? Does this just randomly happen sometimes? Did she fall off her roost twig (1/2inch off the floor) and for some reasons chickens cant roll off their back? Or is this symptomatic of an illness I need to worry about for the rest of my girls?

Any tips to watch for or guesses would be appreciated. I just want to prevent this from happening again to anyone other girly. She was an adorable little thing...

As long as you don't notice any outright signs of disease I wouldn't sweat it too much. Some chicks just aren't meant to live. Sometimes they have a genetic issue and they live a couple days and then just keel over. I'd be a lot more concerned if all of them died or if you saw them sneezing or with crusty eyes/nose. I always add apple cider vinegar and sugar to the water for the first week to give them a little boost.

Thank you! The other little girls are still doing well (after I got them a new chicken friend to stop their cheering). I was just worried as it was so.. well.. odd.
