I've wanted chickens for a while now... and begun my coop last week!
I have recycled some wood pallets, as well as my pool!! lol. Yeah, I took the metal "contour" of the pool and used that to waterproof the coop
It wasn't the easiest thing, but was free and it was something less going to the landfill.
First, here is what I did with another part of the pool. These are the plastic things you walk on, when you want to wash the pool! I've used them for elevated beds for my garden! The blue parts in the pictures are in fact the pool's plastic cover, I used it as a barrier for unwanted weeds
Here is the base of the coop:
I put the walls up!
I found some (free) windows, I mounted them on the pallet. I made the roof. ALL BY MYSELF!! Getting the 4*8 plywood on the roof was something.. lol
Back view:
Then I got some help and we covered the roof with the metal from the pool. VERY hard to manipulate. It was EXTRA windy that day!
A little hole for future ventilation. It is the side from where the wind comes (weird phrase.. sorry), so even if the hole isn't that big, there is a lot of wind inside the coop. The size of the vent opening will be adjustable.
Front, with the nest boxes on the right side!
Inside. This is the part for the egg laying chicks. I have a door and a separation between the meat bird and egg birds:
Meat bird side:
I have to finish the inside now
And put a little finishing touches on the outside - finish screwing the metal, paint the whole thing, wash the windows...
I am proud of having done this almost all myself. I know nothing about construction!! But, at first it was levelled, and not it's not.. I am not sure if it is the rain or the weight of the pallets that modified the level, but we think we can still jack it and make it levelled, before I finish screwing everything in to place.
I hope that by screwing the rest of the metal and painting it, the look will be a bit better.. it is not super cute at the moment lol!
That's it, I will work on it tonight (I have 1.5 hours to work until the hockey game.. gotta watch it!) and the rest of the week.
Hope to be done next weekend to get the chicks
