My call duck just laid her first egg! I was surprised, as I didn't think she would lay until next spring. She was born 3/21 so she is barely 5 months old. It is just her and her mate in the pen, so no confusion on who it came from.

Do they normally lay this young? It's such a pretty little green egg too! Second question, is it likely to be fertile? Her mate is a few weeks younger than her.

Here they are and the egg:

I though Calls were seasonal layers but young layers can have sporadic patterns. It's possible it's fertile but I wouldn't advise hatching the first few eggs laid. They usually aren't the best candidates for hatching.

Thanks for the info! They are suppose to be seasonal layers from what I had read also, so this is odd. She's filled out and looks mature, and the egg looks great, so I must admit, I'm still tempted to incubator-test it. I'll wait a bit and see if she continues to lay.
