My first Silkie ever! Is he Show Quality?

Sonoran - at first I was thinking the Danish Standard or something along those lines, but I just looked it up under the fair rules here in FL and this is what it said:
"Judging will be on a modified Danish System"
So, I guess it is where each bird is judged against the standard and not against each other. Wouldn't that imply that DQs still apply? So, he could still be DQ'd for his color bleeding through, even with the Danish judging system?

This is all confusing

I don;t know if the Danish system DQs or merely does not assign points in that area or deducts points. Back to my spelling test analogy. I guess it would be like spelling silkie "celque" probably more incorrect than "silky" or "slkie," but it is still mis-spelled. I would contact them and ask for a more detailed explanation.

I retried a search using different wording and look what I found:

"The American Poultry Association (APA) publishes a breed standard book, the APA Standard of Perfection, which describes all the breeds and varieties recognized by the organization, and the standards or guidelines by which they are judged.

In youth poultry shows, a modified Danish system is used whereby each bird gets a ribbon. Birds are awarded a blue, red or white ribbon, depending on their quality. In the purebred (exhibition) category a bird receives an automatic white ribbon for:

1. Any disqualification (refer to the APA Standard of Perfection or Fact Sheet PS-33, "Selecting Chickens for Show"). Examples include comb foreign to breed or variety, feathers or stubs on shanks and toes in clean-legged breeds, wry tail, and side sprigs on comb.

2. Any obvious crossbred

3. Emaciated, lame, blind in both eyes, etc.

4. Any evidence of faking "

So, there it is. He SHOULD also be DQ'd even at the fair level (unless the judge doesn't know what he/she is doing). Almost all of the fairs here locally use this type of judging for youth and open.

that is a booked show, because he has a dq then he should take automatic white ribbon(3rd) if shown as bearded black silkie. that would be an unsanctioned show if that is what they r going by most places here do same thing. if he was in aov bearded feather leg class he could take no higher than 1st or best of breed but he would be judged against all breeds in that class so he would have a chance to place higher in aov class.

as an added thought when useing modified Danish system, they get premiums and ribbons u do not get points, plaques, trophies and such as u would at a sanctioned show at least any i have shown at or shows i have worked for. normally all competitors recieve premiums and ribbons but that doesn't mean all birds will recieve them however the majority of them do.

In AOV, you have to specify the color of that bird being shown. There is nothing that bird can be called, except an off-colored black. The purpose of the AOV class is not to be a place where you can throw your DQed birds into the show and expect to win something, it's so that some of the newer varieties that are being worked on that have yet to be recognized can be seen.

Well, I think I am going to find him a pet home. I have thought a lot about this and think it is best. I don't want to show him at fairs only to get a white ribbon every time. If he even manged to get a red or blue, I would know the judge didn't know what they were doing and it would take the pleasure out of it. I also don't want to risk breeding since the gold could come out in later generations. At this time, I don't know enough about breeding Silkies to be sure I am getting the type of girl this guy needs to breed clear, so ... I think it is best for all if he goes to a pet home.

Luckily, I have a Frizzled Cochin that I think I will enjoy showing. I will try my luck with him since he won't be an automatic DQ at every show. It will be more fun that way, I think

Finally someone got it right.
BTW-I have never heard on an "AOV feather leg class" where various breeds would be competing together. My experience in this area includes nearly 50 years of showing & having served as show secretary for 3 different shows.
