I have 4 Black Australorps and 1 Rock. All girls, all lay daily and have for 2 yrs now. Then suddenly late last week we heard a funky weak sounding crow from one of my Australorps. I watched her this morning fluff herself up, lift her head and make a sound that can only be described as a short burst crow.

What just happened? Why is she making this noise? She is still laying but not old (about 2 yrs and 4 months).

We did cut some trees in the yard which left one side very exposed and opened compared to what it used to be. Could she just be assuming a more protective role?

My hen that has chicks started to crow when her chicks hatched. She crows to gather them up when they get to far. Also like what @featheredplanets said protective rooster role. There could also be another reason and that would be if she stopped laying eggs. This could mean that one of her ovaries stopped working and her body will start to produce testosterone. It will make her stop laying eggs and make her grow spurs and other rooster traits, besides that there is nothing to worry about. Unless you like eggs.
