So sad today. I lost my little girl, scuttlebutt yesterday. I found her dead in the duck's mini pool. The pool is actually the top of a wreath cover, so it is beyond shallow. She would hang with the ducks and her sister, and that mini pool has been there for years. I'm clueless what killed her. Here are some possibilities.
1. She had a bad mite/maggot infestation a while back, but the vet treated her, and she was fine.
2. Egg bound?
3. I was cutting tree branches and vines and she was near me. Toxic plant?
4. Was filling wine bottles with rat/mouse poison, but I made sure my animals had no access.
5. Newcastle
6. Bug spray poisoning I'm having a severe infestation of those darn huge winged water roaches in my house. I have been using Raid and poison gel throughout the house. Because I'm building a new coop, my girls sleep in the house. When I let skuttlebutt out, the first thing she does is run to the kitchen. She found and ate some of the dead roaches. Could this have possibly kill her?

Again, she was fine in the morning. I ran an errand and when I returned she was gone. Please help..

I'm so sorry for your loss. :hugs I think (and this is just a guess) your most likely reason is the poisoned roaches. That bug killer is quite toxic, especially for a small animal like a chicken. I would make sure you keep the other chickens far away form anywhere you use the poison.

You could send her body to the state vet for a necropsy to look for a cause of death. They are open M-F and you can take the body in or ship it overnight to arrive in the next day. The body must be kept cold but not frozen. So sorry for your loss. I would take care of any possible toxins that other chickens could get into.
