Hey all!

Today I was hanging out with my peeps 11-13 weeks old. And I noticed that they responded to the birds in the area. The birds started singing different and then dogs started barking and my girls stood up as tall as they could and started making a churrrrrring noise. It would be a churrrr-churrrr over and over again for about 5 to 6 minutes. I was wondering if anyone has heard their chickens make this noise? And if any one knows what it may mean in Chickenese? I just found this intriguing as it is definitely a new noise.

I have eight hens and the two oldest hens do the exact same thing that you described and the other six stand still. I watched them and I believe the older hens have taken the job of a rooster and are putting out an alert to the other girls. That's my guess anyway.

That sounds like a very good hypotheses. Thank you for taking time to help :) I do think it is a warning thing at least for my girls this time. Really it was the standing still that I found intriguing, bc the never stand still LOL! I just listened and thought it was odd, the correlation of events anyways. It was cute! I liked the little noise but hope they don't have to do that very often. You have a good night and a great weekend!
