So we have a young 18 wk old goose Sebastopol x embden. This goose has it out for my hens, it has taken the combs off many and now has grabbed two by the wings causing severe damage.
The goose lives with the hens since 10 weeks. It gets lots of outside free range time. We think the aggression with the combs is in the early morning in the coop so we keep adding more enrichment things, more perches, more food and water dishes. The wings may be a mating thing?
So now we are urgently trying to decide what to do.
Do we seperate the goose from the flock except when free ranging and hope it settles? We don't want him lonely but it is actually proving very difficult to find another goose. Will the chicken behavior settle down you think in the presence of another goose and not being confined together?
Lastly, how can we make a new goose friend introduction successful?
Lastly, how can we sex this bird?
Thanks so much for your time.

I was never able to have my geese and chickens/ducks in the same coop. If you can split the coop and keep the goose on one side the chickens on the other for sleeping that would be best.
Once outside free ranging on their half-acre fencing they were okay but never closed up.
Introductions should go pretty good at this age, just use the see no-touch method for a few days to get them acquainted it may not even take that long.

You can try vent sexing info online. Ganders will have a longer slimer neck than a female but at 18 weeks it will probably take vent sexing to get it right, and even then it may not tell the tale if not done right.

Land birds and water birds have to different ways of what the world is. Geese are incredible but they understand goose flock family. I think it is really rare to get a guardian goose to be one for land birds or even other waterfowl. I believe geese need geese. Miss Lidia has some good advice on introducing a new friend. If your Successful your chickens wouldn't be a target anymore. Geese make great property guardians they show size and presents to birds of prey which usually helps to discourage them. But just my thoughts they are not really protective of thouse they dont relate to

I tried my geese with my ducks and geese were mean to ducks. I tried my chickens with my ducks and chickens were mean to ducks. seems everybody be mean to duckies. have not tried geese with chickens but dont want to. besides that ducks total the grass areas that geese like to nibble on. so no ducks in goose pen or no grass for geese. I think everyone is happier in their own spaces.
as for sexing , i read venting is dangerous unless someone who really knows what they are doing does it. I learned a few other ways to tell. ganders have a real honk honk sound but the lady geese sound more screechy. ganders have a cuter tighter looking higher up 'butt' than girl geese do... lol... but yeah girl geese butt is more round and their Lobes hang much lower . there was also something about the tail feathers one sex has pointier ones than the other Ill have to go outside and look again to tell you which is which..... ok im back the gander's tail feathers are slightly pointier than the goose. But if you only have one goose you wont be able to compare :( Im sorry
