Help. I have a hen, Magna, who has started acting ill or sad. Magna is isolating herself from my other chickens. I have two other hens and a rooster. The rooster and one of the hens is new. I have had them for about a month now and she has been acting this way for about a week now. She eats, drinks and goes to the nesting box at night and comes out in the morning. I can’t figure out what is wrong. Magna used to be aggressive when eating to make sure she got hers first but now she eats just a little and seems almost timid about it. She lays down all day. She tucks her head buried deep in her wing. Sometimes I can’t even see her head. She doesn’t have any injury I can see. But I have seen the rooster mount her once now and I’m wondering if she is upset about having him in the pen.
could she just be “hiding” from him?
Any help would be appreciated. They are my pets and I hate she is not feeling well.
thanks!

How old is she? Is she laying, and did you lose any birds recently? Some birds do suffer emotional trauma when confronted with a predator attack, or the loss of a dear friend. Try adding sugar to her water, hope she gets better.

She is about 3 ish. And no, she and my other hen quit laying. I thought they were both broody so that’s why I got the rooster. I got the new hen with him. After about two weeks the new hen is laying. Both my original hens still aren’t. They were all broody at first now none of them are but my hen is upset.
thanks for the sugar suggestion. I’ll try it.
