I just wanted to share this unusual story. My 3 year old black australorp Tulip was acting perfectly normal yesterday until I went to lock the chickens up at dusk. She was in the nest box with her tail pointed up. I thought that was weird and I left her in there. About a half hour later I checked on her and she was still there. No egg but a little poop in the next box, which never happens. I felt her abdomen gently- it was firm- and she was squatting a little. I took her in the house around 9pm last night, gave her some Tums for extra calcium, have her a warm soak, and put her in a crate in the spare room. She seemed bright and alert. Around 10pm I checked on her And she was fluffed up with her eyes half closed- obviously not feeling well. I had some pain meds left over from the vet from from a previous hen’s incident so I gave her one of those. At 3:30am this morning I woke up to check on her and there were 2 eggs in the crate. 1 was pretty normal looking, just some pigment issues on the one side. The other was shell-less. I guess 1 must have been stuck in there since the day before but she didn’t show signs until they started backing up. She went from appearing g perfectly fine to having a problem very quickly. She seemed fine before I left for work this morning so I put her back with the flock. I will monitor her closely. Just wanted to share as I haven’t read about a hen laying 2 eggs at the same time before. For those who may wonder, she eats layer feed with oyster shells and crushed up egg shells on the side at all times. Hopefully she will start to molt soon and stop or slow egg production and give her body a chance to rest up.
