Hi Everyone! Yesterday I took a look at this little girl from afar, and on my way out, and thought that she might not be doing well. She seemed to be slow moving, apart from the other ones, on the ground in a corner in the coop at night when we checked on her and her general demeanor was different from the other ones. We separated her last night and upon a closer look today I noticed not only that her comb is down, she looks sick, does have a fever and her abdomen close to the tail area seems to be swollen. Her bottom is not to dirty at all. This morning I took a look at her feces and basically they are white with water and lay flat on the ground. Considering she was in that cage all night I do not thing she pooped that much.

Problem: I do believe in Murphy's law so much! It so happens that I am traveling tomorrow and will not be here for the next 6 days. I have a young lady staying in charge of the farm until my return. But, she does not have much experience with the flock. Although she is a fast learner.

What do you guys think it might be? Bound egg? Bacterial? The feces are not bloody or green so I do not think it is coccidiosis. Also, as far as we know we do not have any other parasites although I was in the process or getting examples to check. Here are pictures. I do have antibiotics, probiotics, oregano oil, and corid meds and supplements at home that I can start her on depending on your opinions and suggestions.

Thank you for your help! Natalia

How old is she, and does she lay eggs? Is her comb color darker than normal? Is the comb usually flopped over? That can be common in large combed chickens, or it can be due to dehydration. How does her crop feel—empty, full, hard, puffy, or doughy? Can you give some Poultry NutriDrench or electrolytes? Has she been eating and drinking? If her lower belly seems enlarged, she could have ascites (water belly) or she might have a reproductive infection or disorder. Is her tail position down?

All good questions! Let me go outside and check on her.

She is one of my leghorns. I have five. I know that one of them always lays softshell eggs that they instantly break. I tried a lot of cures but didn’t work. Instead of getting rid of her, her being one of George’s, (head roo,) favorites I kept her. She is three years old this month.
Her comb color is darker than usual and although always drapes over the side it’s more droopy than usual. I have electrolytes I can get her.
I will need to check for the other symptoms. I’ll be back.

So, her crop is empty and her tail is down. She also seemed to be thinner than usual.
here is a picture of one of her friends what they look like.

Ok! So ascites is not curable, I just read about that, but what about a reproductive infection? Can I treat that in case that’s what it is? I have antibiotics.
