Hi, I was referred to the emergency area by a replied post to a problem I have with my eldest hen, Ms Priss, who is the last of the original 3, is approximately 2 1/2 yrs old & a road island red. Yesterday late afternoon, I noticed during care time that she was acting strange... tipped over the water jug & walking into things etc. As I looked closer at her I noticed her eyes were closed and there was traces of blood on her face. I have 3 hens of the same breed currently & 1 rooster that is a diff. breed, silver something idk, they all get along great! There is no picking order, they all live happy & soundly. (A hard thing to accomplish!) Even if there was a picking order, Ms Priss would be top hen as she is the most respected. This leaves me to believe that the blood on her was caused by her, herself maybe by scratching at her head cause it was itchy or cause of the aggravation it must have caused to not be able to see... her eye lids are closed completely, no slit, no redness or puffiness, no clear, yellow, green or opaque fluid present, no dried gunk (eye boogies) either. I tried to find any wounds on her head but because she was extra traumatized with me holding her, I didn't get a satisfying look. She is NOT puffed up now nor was she yesterday. However, she DID NOT lay today but did yesterday, which tells me this happened suddenly & not something that made her feel ill slowly. I saw her eat some yesterday, although not easy for her (or me) yesterday & I believe she consumed some water, being that she spilled it on the floor of the coop & was scratching for food. It is warm here, low down to 48 last night & high was 74 degrees today. I put mulch down on the floor so she would be warm as well but she ended up on the sleep shelf/roost somehow last night anyways. I am puzzled & have NO idea what could have happened. I also am not sure she can survive being blind or how much that would require of her & us. I feel I should mention that we recently noticed borrow holes around the pen/run of the coop, indicating small nasty furry friends present. We have taken precautions for this problem with the control of, food, water & inside coop. Please post any question I didn't answer & any ideas of what could be happening or how I can help her. I feel just horrible for her & would really like to make her better asap! Thank you very much! :+) ps- I will attempt to post pics tomorrow but I am technologically not up to par.

what kind of mulch are you using? i did have a temporary blind roo and it was a pain for him and me but he got better. i used a small water pump and he could hear the water and find it that way. then i had to tap on the food dish until he learned where it was. i kept him in a cage until he recovered. i hope someone can help

Hi & thanks, the water pump thing is a great idea & even better I have 1 not in use! I put Cyprus mulch down for her & covered it with dead leaves... not sure if that was a wise choice but it was what I had at the moment. She didn't sleep there, she somehow got up to the sleep shelf, as I call it, last night & I personally put her up there tonight. I hope she gets better like ur rooster did... I wish I knew what. I could do to help that!

how is your hen today? i think i would change the Cyprus out for pine and the wet leaves can get a mold thats not good for them

Hi! I put the water pump in yesterday, it sure is making everyone curious! 1 of which is her...so mission accomplished! Thanks you! The leaves were a temp thing for the night to help keep her warm...I hv since then removed them. She seems calmer but still no improvements to her eyes. I've not gotten many responses on my posts, so I'm still puzzled at why this happened & or if I can do something to help the condition...

Hi- I've got promising news! 1 of her eyes is about 1/2 open & the other has a slit. :) I am so glad there are eyeballs still in there! I was worried so bad, my mind was thinking the worst! I still have absolutely no clue as to what happened but I am grateful it's looking better 4 her- thank u so very much for your help & support :)

i am glad she is better. would like to know what caused it though. if no sickness at all , allergy? bug bite? very puzzled.
