My Homemade Brooder.. *PICS*

Always use marbles or rocks to stop chicks from drowning as new hatchlings. Elevate the water up so you don't have to scoop out bedding ten million times a day.

You have some great ideas! Is this for chicks or ducks? That would probably make a difference for the water / drowning risk.

YEah I've read they can drown too. My boys picked out polished gems to go in the first time. THere's enough room for the beaks to reach the water but not for a chick to get into the water; this time they picked marbles to put in. It also attract the chicks to the water. We picked marbles and polished gems because they could be sanitized easily before putting in. Drowning won't be such a problem in a week. GL

Becareful of the shaving in the beginning as they will try to eat them. Better to start with papertowels over the shavings. Also if they can get in the water the make a huge mess fast! and will soak everything. We had 1 die overnight because she got soaked and couldn't dry under the heat lamp

We learned to take away food and water overnight. And they grow fast, so the brooder get small very fast.
