Hello!
I wanted to make a thread showing the progression of one of my EE's feathers. Now part of the reason I wanted EEs (besides the eggs of course) was the fact that their colors and traits are a total toss up. I wanted a chicken lottery and I really got it!
First off, whoever packed my order really was generous. I got 4 EEs and none of them look similar. Like, at all. I was slightly prepared to have all of them end up looking the same (boring) because you just never know with hatchery breeding stock.
Second, one chick in particular really surprised me with how she feathered out. In all my browsing of EEs on this site, I've never seen a picture of one like her. I ordered from chickensforbackyards.com which presumably sources from Cackle.
So here is Kida, the EE as a chick. In this picture she is about a week old. She is up front and center, dark grey chick. One of my other EEs, Belle, was very similar as a chick, just slightly lighter grey.
This next picture is Kida at a little over 2 weeks. She suddenly overnight grew bright ORANGE feathers! And she sure looks smug about it too! Here she is on the left, next to the lighter grey EE Belle.
The orange didn't stop there. Every day she had more orange feathers. Here she is at 3 weeks.
Now she's really getting interesting. Bright orange feathers start erupting from her dark grey head fluff, and one her neck she has grey feathers laced with gold! 4 weeks here.
There is nothing like natural light to bring out those golden feathers which are now engulfing my plain grey chick. 5 weeks old they went outside.
Here she is at 6.5 weeks, showing off her beautiful lacing.
7.5 weeks, she still has smokey grey wings and tail
And this is Kida currently, at 9 weeks! Her EE cheeks and beard are black with some orange edges!
There you have it! I hope everyone was as impressed with that as I was. If anyone was wondering, the lighter grey chick Belle stayed a beautiful lavender color all throughout.
