My Life of Pet Peeves

Shasta awoke as the sun's morning rays gleamed through the tiny cracks in his little wood shack and too the sound of birds singing their love songs.

"Good morning" he said to his pet donkey Peeves. He reached over and scratched the dust filled hair on the donkeys nose. "How did you sleep buddy?" He asked his friend. Peeves brayed softly and nuzzled Shasta's chest. Shasta laughed and a hugged peeves around his neck. " me too" he said. Shasta stood up and brushes the dust off his clothes. Shasta was a boy no older than 12 years old. He was rather skinny and light weight for a boy his age and shiny brown hair, large dark brown eyes, a small round nose, and dark skin that had been kissed by the sun. He wore torn up overalls that would fit a boy three years younger than him, a brown shirt that used to be white, and no shoes.

"I'll be right back ok?" He said to his friend as he walked out into the luscious green world before him. He walked to a small Apple tree that hid behind his shack and selected 2 delectable apples that were damp with the mornings fresh dew.

Peeves looked up as his master returned with breakfast in his hands and quickly went to greet him and brayed loudly.
"Here you go" Shasta said as held out his hand and opened.

Peeves quickly snatched the apple from Shasta's hand and bit into it with a loud crunch. Before Shasta could take a bite out of his breakfast Peeves had already finished his and was reached for Shasta's. Shasta laugh and pushes Peeves back.
"This is mine" he said. Shasta quickly gobbled down the apple before Peeves could steal any of it.

A short while later Shasta and Peeves walked down the dirt path to the small village the lay ahead. While walking to the village they came upon a small stream that was trickling through the forest. Shasta kept walking by but Peeves decided to stop for a quick drink. Shasta looked over his shoulder at Peeves as he stopped for a drink.

"What are you doing?" Shasta said. Peeves ignored Shasta and kept drinking from the stream. "C'mon, we're going to be late" Shasta said as he tugged on the rope that was tied around Peeves' neck. Peeves lifted up his head and looked at Shasta then went back to drinking from the stream.

"Fine, quick drink. Then we're going." He let go of the rope then and went over to the stream, got down on his knees and cupped his hands in the river and took a long refreshing drink. He finished drinking and stood up then grabbed Peeves' rope. "Time to go" He said. Peeves obediently lifted up his head and followed Shasta down the road.
