We have some hens who don't cope well in cold weather. They'll stand by me, hoping for any body warmth, and puff up. They'll shiver and try to hide a leg in their plumage. Usually, I pick up one at a time and hold them in a towel until they're a little better. Then they seem fine the rest of the day.
I'm so sorry about your girl. You're not a bad Mama at all. You'd only be bad if you didn't ask about it at all and left her to die. At least you tried something and made the going alot less painful for her. You were there for her, and that's what Mamas do best.
