Hello I'm a novice. Perfect way to start it off don't you think? We got our first chickens in September last year from first Monday in canton. We got 2 rhode island reds, and a black austrolorp. We named the RIRs amber and rita. And the BAO we named macy. Unfortunately for our first pen we used CHEAPCHEAP chicken wire from a road side store. A dog came in and killed rita. Our own dog, Max killed Amber my favorite chicken. Macy, the smart one and leader of the group survived. In November we ordered a bunch of Barred Rocks chicks. Things went good and we only lost a few. Then something bad happened. As part of a temporary run we used a large homemade cage (earlier this had been a brooder). Well this cage offered a perfect device for the dog that killed Rita, we called him "big red" some sort of great dane/german shepher/ other breed/ mutt, killed most of our chickens. Now where starting over. We have built a new sturdy safe pen, and are working on our new tractor. Macy, and the surviving bards Rita (named after my RIR because of their high strung personalities) and Butch the rooster, an example of the best kind of a rooster despite his name. He always lets the hens eat first , watches for predators, but lets me by as long as I don't get to close.

We have some new game chickens and are working (old english or something like that) who today where old enough to let outside with the big chickens! Things are finally starting to look up!

I loved reading posts on this site and decided to join it! I will continue reading and commenting. Hope for the best and am learning a LOT!!!
