Well we have been having a LOT of rain the last few weeks. About a week and a half ago a friend of mine showed up with 8 goose eggs. He said that his sister had rescued them from thier flooding creek. Being the air head that I can be so often I didnt think twice and said sure I will try putting them in the bator. They were sooooo cold. He said she had grabbed them up the night before and put them under some banty hens.. I really wish I could have seen that since these were huge eggs..lol Well, I candled one and was pretty sure I saw some movement so I put them in. All they could tell me was that they had been set on for about 3 weeks.. I kept trying to candle and finally did the warm water test and knew that at least 5 were alive. I upped the humidity around Wed. and sat back and waited. I truely thought they were just from thier own geese. A couple days later I asked what they were and if she wanted them back......... Oh he said, they are wild canadian geese and no she doesnt want them back. AHHHHHHHHH!!!! I have illigals..lol Of course 6 out of 8 eggs hatched over the weekend. I called the DNR this morning and they gave me the number for my local guy. I left him a message so he is suppose to call me back and pick them up tomorrow. At first I was going to raise them up a little and then turn them loose but then I decided that I didnt want to feed them and have the kids fall in love. I currently have 8 other legal goose eggs hatching right now so we will have plenty of goslings. Some times I wish I can say no but am glad I could save these little fellas.. Jenn

Thank GOD!!!!! They are leaving today at 2:30!! Only a little over an hour before the rest of my babies can rest in peace. These are the meanest little s%^$s I have ever seen!!! I have always brooded many different breeds of birds together with out an ounce of problems. It started out ok but over the last 48 hours they have gotten meaner and meaner. They chase anyone smaller, which is everyone except 2 guineas and 2 poults. Otherwise they are chasing and biting everyone in site. I have a baby guinea that just hatched a few days ago and they are after him constantly. There is a guy coming to pick them up and take them to a wildlife center to raise them and return them to the wild. It happened that he is the same person that had his brother in law bring them to me in the first place. The crazy thing is he grabed the eggs up the night before from getting flooded out. Then he put them in his hen house but none of his hens were broody so no one sat on them all night. I didnt get them until around 10am the next morning...

The were unincubated for close to 12 hours. I was pretty shocked when I took them out of the box at houw cold they were and figured that there was no way they would still be alive. Then I ended up with 6 of the 8 hatching!!

I guess this is a lesson for all of us who have power failures and everything else that never give up!!!! I had 8 of my own goslings hatch yesterday, unfortunately one was dead this morning and I really think they stepped all over it and killed it last night. I have learned though that if I ever hatch out other canadians that they will be brooded away from every one else. Jenn

Well, they are off on thier ne adventure!! For any one who is worried about a little power failure these guy went through everything. The fella that picked them up said that when his son went to check on the nest it was in water. The eggs were covered but the hen was still trying to keep them from floating away. The boy chase her off and grabbed them up. Then when he got them to the house they put them in the hen house but no one would sit on them.... Then they were brought to me the next morning. 6 out of 8 hatch just to show us that anything can happen..

Yeah many long timers know eggs can be tough. They seem tougher than hatched babies actually..

I have various broody hens in single cages(to protect them from being bothered by other hens). Last week after letting everybody out for food break, I got ready to visit family.. was running late and thought all hens were back on their nests so the doors were all being closed up in a rush. 2 days later I came back home to find a hen OUT.. Ohhhh noooooo.. accidentally locked her out of her nest the whole two days.. Let her back in on her nest and candled her eggs today, all except 2 showed movement. Whew, but not surprised..
