My marans aren't marans????

I have been waiting for my marans to start laying. A duck has taken over their coop and I though they might not start laying until she's gone (eggs are set to hatch on Sunday). We put a big dog house with bedding next to the coop for them in case the duck got an attitude about sharing space with the marans and I found 2 eggs in there this afternoon.

But they're not dark brown!!!

I have a lot of chickens on the property, but unless my old layers got out of their covered pen and then back inside, the ducks have started laying small brown eggs, my silkie roosters started laying brown eggs, or my 16 week old buckeyes came down from the other barn to lay eggs in the dog house these eggs are from my 22 week old marans.

I'm sooooo bummed. Can they start laying light eggs and then have them darken? I've only heard of the opposite!

Here are some pictures of them.

I can't see your pictures.

Where did you get them? If you got them from a hatchery they normally don't lay the nice dark eggs. They start out dark and lighten up through their laying cycle.

my marans lay a darker brown egg w/ tiny chocholate colored specks all over them. i hope this is ok- but they taste good!!!

If they are hatchery marans they won't be as dark as you want them to be. They will get a bit darker with age as the pullets mature to hens.

2 roosters to 4 - 5 hens is 1 rooster too many.

Their legs look to be the right coloring, other than the one roo in the 4th picture on the left, they don't look like my cuckoos. They might be a mix...where did you get them?
