Hi, Everyone!
I've a Marans/Sussex-X Hen, "Duchess", who was returned to me with a really bad case of Bumble Foot. They said, "We weren't sure whether to take her to the vet or not." They said that she had been that way for a few weeks and had continually been getting worse. The poison had eaten it's way through the bone of one of her toes!! Nuff said. Anyway, I've been cleaning out the foot, & digging out the cauliflower-like cheesy poison. Then, stuffing the hole with epsom salts wrapped in gauze. Just for the record, I've been using Emla cream to deaden the area which has been working a treat. Fortunately, Duchess is an extremely good-natured Hen so she puts up with the operation every time I change her bandages. Anyway, she must've got a little frustrated (maybe more painful than I thought, poor dear!) & suddenly pecked at the gauze swallowing it whole! About a wk ago, she did the same thing but it was only a very small piece and she was ok. This time, it was a whole square of gauze! Size-wise, she's between a Marans' size and a Sussex' size, but that was a whole square piece of gauze! I'm worried that it might cause an impacted crop or stuff up her stomach. This happened at lunchtime and I've just finished cleaning out her wound in her foot (ended up making 3x holes over a 2 wk period to get at the poison. Yes. She's had it a long time. At first, I just treated her with antibiotics until I came across this Epsom Salt method). Anyway, I only just remembered what happened to her earlier today! I should've done an operation on her crop to remove the gauze instead of cleaning out her poisoned foot but I forgot! Or maybe done it during the afternoon once she was given a break! Stupid me! I do have a memory problem which doesn't help. Grrr! But, I don't want to put her through any further stress. Plus, it is probably too late to get it out of her crop as it has probably already passed through to her stomach! s***! Excuse the language but I'm really worried as Duchess means quite a bit to me even though I did end up selling her. I'm not a vet, but I have resorted to doing simple things that Vets can do as I don't always have the money to take my chickens to the vet. I've done two successful impacted crops on my Silkies during the past year. That's when I found out about Emla after I asked the Chemist whether there was something I could use. Anyway, I don't have any money to take Duchess to the Vets. I've felt her crop and it appears empty so I suppose there is nothing I can do but wait and see how she goes. Hopefully, the gauze will pass through her system without any problems. Any advice? I feel as if, this time there isn't an easy solution. I'll probably just have to wait and see how Duchess goes and hope for the best. If she does show some discomfort or appears unwell, all I can do is take her to the Vet and see if they will help. Unfortunately, nowadays, one has to join a pet loan shark if you can't pay upfront. I'll just have to do that if she starts to go downhill.
HELP! ANYONE!
