Hello,
so yesterday we just arrived at our summer location and of course we bring the chickens with us. They have a ton of more space here, more natural roosts and a ton of places to dust bath and we let them range in a big nice area during the day. Now today I decided I should probably do that feather check and I did and what I found both puzzled and concerned me. I've never heard of the common house fly on a chicken? As I pulled one of my hens feather apart with my fingers a fly flew out landed on her and crawled back in between her feathers. so I looked again and the same thing happened. What should I do about that? It's a nice day I was considering baths but with what kind of soap? I found a few mites on her could that have something to do with the fly? I'm going to treat for mites but Anyways another thing was her skin was really brown and dusty I assumed this was from the many dust baths shes been having.
thanks so much

Flies will lay their eggs in cuts and any poop stuck to the bottom. You don't want that happening. Make sure there's no reason a fly would be on them except to be pesky.

flies sometimes bite to eat blood and skin. Generally they don't bother chickens too much, and usually the chickens make lunch out of the flies. As long as there's no where for maggots to feed on I wouldn't worry.
