My 8 m.o. muscovy girl started cheeping/quacking. It almost sounds like the bark of a small dog. It is very strange. My husband said he noticed it 2 days ago.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Is she sick? Is she trying to quack like the Pekins?

Mine sometimes make strange noises too, it usually is the girls, the boys just hiss & huff. Muscovies will quack if they get scared, startled or hurt. but some are also just 'different'

Interesting question. My first female just sort of trilled very softly. Then she moved out and so I got a second female. Every time I look at her, walk by, etc., she quacks. At first I thought maybe she was a crossbreed of some sort, but I guess some just quack.

Well, she's been laying eggs lately, and two days ago she finally started sitting on them. Within those last two days she went from "quack" to a sort of "chirp". So perhaps it is a broody thing? :)

My broody girls do the high pitched "cheep", "peep" quacky thing too, it's just because they're in that 'mood' & warning everyone to stay away from them and their eggs

My broody girls often chase the other girls too for no reason.

I will TRY to get a video of one of mine making their noise.

Dave,
Do you have a picture of your girl? the usually don't quack all the time..

Both my male and female scovies squack. Not a lot...just when they want treats from me or if I am bother my female while she is on her nest. They are both 9 months old. I know many say males only hiss...but mine squacks. He started doing it shortly after my female did. I know hes a male because I've seen his goods.

Oddly enough, I don't have a picture of my new girl, and now that she's gone broody she's in a spot that I really can't easily get to. I'm 99% sure she's straight Muscovy, and 99.44% sure she's a girl :). I should clarify, though, that it is actually more of a short "honk" that she does, not really a quack per se. That probably would have been a better description on my part.
