she has this chicken wire coop that is a coop and run all in one and its only made out of chicken wire and the coop inside is just a wire shelf type thing. the "door" to get in is just chicken wire overlapped on the front vertically. she secures it with a stick. I've tried to give her advice on how to make it secure because she's going to lose chickens with it like that... but she thinks I am just overreacting and stuff. . but guess what? 2 nights ago she had an animal break in and take a chicken. so she tried "fixing" the coop yesterday. I was there and she was just overlapping more chicken wire all over it. I again tried warning her that it wouldn't hold any animals back but she insisted that it was fine. She lost all but 2 of the smaller chicks last night.

Im upset because this could have been prevented ya know? but she thinks that if she just takes the little chicks out that the larger ones will be fine. They most certainly will not be fine. And she's going to end up losing ALL her chicekns if she doesn't do anything about this coop.

I guess I dont need any real advice, but just needed to let it out to chicken people who would understand. I guess she wants to send the 2 little ones that are left to live with my 2 little ones for now until they get bigger.... But she just assumes that they won't take the 7 week ones!!!!!!!

Just goes to show, once again, that stupid can't be fixed.

Or, the $$ for decent wire isn't worth it to her, so she is telling herself things she knows aren't true.

Either way, you did your part, of course.

Our neighbors allow their birds to roost in a short tree about 4' off the ground in an uncovered run. We lock our girls up religiously at dusk, even when it means that we have to leave parties early to do so.

DBF and I are wondering how long it will be before a raccoon or a possum, both of which live in our neighborhood, takes a bird or 10.

its just so frustrating ya know? I mean they will never get to laying age at this point. they won't BE here.

I talked with my other neighbor about it.. all 3 of us got chickens this year... she's going to give her the "game plan" of making her coop secure. I'm offering to help if I can. Hopefully she will take us up on our offer to help. I hope so.

This scenario goes right along with the idiots that think dogs kill chickens BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT DOGS DO !!

Oh, well, if she lets you keep the smaller chickens, then at least those will be safe .....

But, make sure she foots the bill for feeding them, because you know she will want them back some day. And if she has not done any suitable alterations to the coop, these will be eaten by some predator, too. I would hate to see you wasting money to feed chicks that are eventually going to get eaten......
