Hello everyone! My name is Betzy and I'm new in this adventure of raising chickens and I'm lovin' it.
On mid April, mid pandemic, a small rooster fell from the claws of a hawk in our backyard. He was bleeding from the head, where the comb is supposed to be and he was very scared. We thought that maybe the hawk was grabbing him by the head, the comb came off and that's why he fell from its claws. We rescued him and called him Max. This was our first experience with chickens. Researching we discovered he was a serama rooster. We bought a coop but he lived inside our house most of the time. Winter was coming and not knowing nothing about chickens, we decided to get some chickens that could provide him with some warm company when he needed to be outside. My beautiful Orpington Buff (5) chickens arrived mid November (there were 8, 1 arrived dead and 2 we gift to my niece). Researching again, we found out we couldn't leave the chickens outside for their first winter even if they were fully feather, sooooo, they have been leaving inside our house all these 17 weeks!!! It has been an adventure, we love them with all our hearts, but I'm very tired of cleaning so much every day that I really need them to live outside as soon as possible. We are transitioning them little by little, a few hours a day, hoping we can leave them outside full time next week. We've been through sickness (we think it was coccidiosis, the 5 almos died!) and sudden death. Our dear Max died New Year's Eve probably from a heart attack, that was the saddest thing. This happen on December when we finally introduced our rooster with the chicks at 6 weeks old. The next very day, everything fell apart and started to get sick one by one. Those were very scary days, worrying about them, medicating them and many nights not being able to sleep. Thank God, the 5 are alive and healthy, even though they looked like they were dead!!
The name of our lovely pet chickens are Miss Prissy, Claudia, Bunny, Chicken Little, and Nana.
I don't know anyone who has chickens. I would love to learn more about other people with backyard chickens, I'd love to hear your stories and experiences.
Thank you!
