When I first started with chickens, I had Rocks, Orpingtons and Reds.
I then added white leghorns for my mother-in-law.
Boy were they laying machines, but flighty in personality.
And they only came in white or brown. Boring.
Well then I found out that leghorns came in many colors
and since I had silkies for "pets" I decided to go with all leghorns for the eggs that we eat.
At the beginning of January, 2011 I started looking for Buff Leghorns but the only hatchery I could find was Ideal.
And they had the whole color assortment I wanted!!
But hubby said "No chicks in the winter" so I waited.
Well, needless to say, when I checked Ideal's website Feb 1 they were already sold out of the buff
so I quickly ordered the other colors (which I'm glad I did since those were sold out by mid month)
Luckily I have a terrific husband.
But I still wanted the buff color......
Last week I found some for sale in New York state (near Corning) and it was only about 5 hours away!! LOL.
(Again, I have a terrific husband.)
She also had 5 buff chicks the same age as my other leghorn chicks.
Yes, I got them too!!
The lady who sold them said she got them from a girl at a show but I don't know which breeder they might have originally come from.
The rooster has frost bite on his comb and they are probably lighter in color than the "buff leghorn breeders" would prefer.
But I think they are beautiful!!!
