Finally! We got the coop done and the lady we were buying from was at a swap today. Perfect! So down there we went and instead of buying a young cockeral the same age as the pullets like I expected, we got this GORGEOUS 1 1/2 year old Ameracauna roo that my son has named Turbo. It had been raining and the light was bad so I couldn't get pictures but suffice it to say I am smitten! He's a really neat fella. They were only selling him because they had 4 and he was a tough guy on the other roos, but great with people. Because one thing I won't tolerate is a people aggressive roo.
For his harem we have 2 Australorp, 2 barred rocks and 2 silver laced Wyandottes, all pullets. The SLW are a few weeks younger than the others but they seemed to do fine. They were cracking me up riding on the roos back on the way home.
Big man kicked around in the run and went straight to the top roost not long after we got home. We put the girls up and they settled down quickly. I think we are off to a good start! I can't wait to share pictures when I get some good ones.
It's been a month since we decided to start this venture. I'm very pleased we are finally here. My 4-year-old is learning quickly and I'm glad to see he's not timid with the pullets. He's a proud new chicken owner.
