Finally got my contractor to build me some extra "chicken storage space" in our semi-insulated garage, as I ran out of space in the coop...
The garage has no drafts and is a couple of degrees warmer than outside, but not by much.
It's ok since this box is insulated with Thermax and I've installed a reptile heating lamp (100W is plenty for the small space).
It is 4' long, 2.5' wide and 4'high, there is a vent on top for air circulation (currently closed with a bit of thermax, just need to pull it out when it gets warmer):
The front panel can be left open or closed with insulation, either fully or part-way (not a tight fit so there is ventilation):
There is hardware cloth on every possible nook and cranny so the mice and other vermin can't get in:
Roost on the left (can lifted higher for taller/bigger birds), nesting box and ledge on the right:
The silkies seem to find it peaceful in there... hope it lasts!
Miss Blossom sitting on some eggs in the nesting box... yep, she's broody 3 months out of 4!!
The feeders are nailed to the wall and they have a heavy water dish in the corner, on the floor. The box is portable so it's coming with us when we move. When the weather gets warmer (April) the birds will be moved to an A-Frame tractor house, this space is for cold months only. It will also be used as a brooder pen. It's insulated and warm, predator proof, easy to clean (everything is removable inside), ventilated... oh and the birds have classical music playing in the garage all day
Thoughts, comments? In case I want to have another one built someday!
