So, this is “Boogers” (named by our 3-year-old). He’s a Brahma/EE, and he’s absolutely fantastic. Super sweet personality, great with his ladies, and gorgeous as well.

I’ve never done any breeding, but have always wanted to give it a try, so I’m thinking about seeing what he produces with some of my hens. But, I’m not sure where to even start.

Here are the hens in my flock:

Australorp
Barred Rock
Black Sex-Link
Buff Orpington
Buckeye
Rhode Island Red
Golden Laced Wyandotte
Light Brahma
Easter Egger
Freedom Ranger (my son pardoned a few during processing and they’re part of the family now)

Im interested in temperament, beauty, and production - probably in that order.

If you had those options - what do you think you’d try?

Thanks!!

Barred Rock (all the male chicks will be barred. That may be interesting or useful to you. If not, I would use her, since the chicks will be rather bland in color.)
Buff Orpington
Buckeye
Rhode Island Red
Golden Laced Wyandotte
Light Brahma
Easter Egger
Those are the best options since they won’t produce mostly black chicks.
Temperaments and production will probably be about the same for all.
Or you could just breed him with all your hens if that’s easier.
