My son took this pick of them basking in the heat of there lamp and being sleepy.
I have my brooder made out of a big rubbermaid storage container with most the lid cut out and replaced with hardewire cloth.
Dog pile on the eggs lol
they all hatched in diffrent areas but came to each other to sleep it was cute
Mr peepers here likes to complain ALL the time
Poor little guy is tiny tiny tiny and I had to open the top of his shell for him but I let him come out on his own.
sleep eat and poop and wake me up sevral times in the night crying.
little fuzzy piggies they are
some seem more golden then others like most are more brown with gold stripes while some seem more golden with brown stripes ?
she has a little brown spot on her head , eating is hard work
I love the dead bird pose except when it scared me half to death
Any one know anything about these guys. are they a certian type or just your normal run of the mill jumbo brown quail?

I think these guys have eaten and pooped more in the past day then the baby chukars did the whole week they were here. Not to mention one if them is such a fuss buget he peeps and peeps and peeps and peeps. Can not for the life of me figure out what he wants.

Lol. Guess being a quail whisperer only comes with lots of practice. Have you tried putting a mother substitute in the brooder with them? I have read a couple of different places that fussy chicks (of all sorts) are happier if they have something to hide/cuddle under in lieu of a mother hen sitting on them...I am going to try it with mine when I get them next week. I saw a photo of a small box (maybe 2" tall?) a guy had wrapped in a plush terry cloth towel, and the his chicks loved to cuddle under it - he said it made them very happy babies and the box kept it supported so they couldn't get trapped under it and smother. I am thinking about one of those fuzzy tunnels they make for parrots and ferrets that you can get at the pet stores - as long as it is washable of course!

This is what I do. More so with quail. They love to huddle up and borrow themselves under Momma. So I put a stuffed animal in the brooder with them and there's always chicks cuddled up underneath it or roosting on top lol. That's probably why he's peeping. He wants something to sit on him

Especially when they are really young.

Yeah I will have to try one of those fuzzy tunnels . I have tried a teddy bear (you can sorta see it in the first pic) and a soft plush fuzzy ball (you can see it in the second pic) and they didnt like the teddy at all though it was a hit with the chukar babies . Most of them like the ball and love to sleep around it or with there head under it . Not squeeky though he just wanders around and peeps alot of the time , he is even a bit skinner then the others I dont know if there just might be something wrong with him that you cant see with just looking or if he just dosnt have enough time to eat and sleep and grow with all the peeping. I have also tried holding him and he stops for a moment or two then starts fussing again.

Do either of you use red lights with your chicks? I am thinking about doing regular bulbs during daylight hours and red light at night, to get them accustomed to the daily rhythm here in the house. Does it seem make much of a difference either way to them? (Duh - after another look at your photos I can see that you do.

) Do you use it 24/7?
